Captains Report – Club Championship 2018
Cameron Murry Club Champion 2018 |
Bernard Schoolar Club Nett Champion 2018 |
This past weekend we held the annual Men’s Club Championships in glorious warm sunshine, and it was obvious that the course was playing fast and hard as only 6 players broke 80 on both Saturday and Sunday. The Competition Scratch Score was 73 for Saturday and 72 for Sunday, showing how difficult the conditions were.
However, even with the conditions being difficult for everyone, we had some fantastic golf. A special mention must be made of James Abbott who managed a Hole in One on the 2nd hole on Saturday – yes that is correct the Par 4 2nd and I am sure a feat which will not be repeated easily.
After Saturdays round the Gross Leader Board had Lee Bettison leading with a superb 73 followed by Cameron Murry on 76, and Warren Lowe and Matt Hill a further 2 shots back with 78’s.
The Nett Leader Board after Saturday had Bernard Schoolar leading with a very impressive 69, followed by Martin Bettison and Paul Hunter on 70. It was now all to play for on Sunday, and after the England Quarter Final win over Sweden on Saturday, it was going to be an interesting Sunday morning depending on how many celebratory beers were had the previous evening.
Down to the final round on Sunday, and in the Gross event, Lee Bettison and Cameron Murry were having a ding dong battle with Cameron slipping 5 behind after a bogey on the 3rd hole and Lee picking up birdie. The next few holes were matched in Pars until the 7th when Lee took a double bogey and Cameron parred to pick up 2 shots, it was now back to a 3 shot lead for Lee. Both players parred holes 8 to 12 and then Cameron made a brilliant Eagle on the 13th verse Lee’s Par to make it a slim 1 shot lead for Lee. The 14th was halved in Pars and then Cameron made another Birdie on the 15th and Lee made Double Bogey to hand Cameron a 2 shot lead with 3 to play. Cameron saw his opportunity and made another great Birdie on the 16th to pick up another shot on Lee, and then when Lee bogeyed the 17th and Cameron made Par, it was a 4 shot lead for Cameron with only the 18th to play. With the crowd gathered around the 18th green, both players made Bogey but it was still good enough for a 4 shot win and a 3rd victory in a row for Cameron. Well played young man.
In the Nett event it was Bernard Schoolar who held his nerve on Sunday to match his steady round from Saturday with a Sunday Nett 73 to keep enough space between him and the chasing pack to win by 3 shots from Sean Rockley who had a 73 as well, and also a hard chasing Lyle Shaw with a 70 left it a little too late to challenge for the top honour. Well played gentleman.
The overall final results will be published on Master Scoreboard in due course, below are the top five for both events:
