CAPTAINS REPORT

APRIL 2024

Well, it is mid-April, and it finally feels like we can see a much-awaited change in the seasons. We, like most other clubs across the Country, have had to delay the start of our new season qualifying rounds whilst our beloved courses recover from an exceptionally wet autumn and winter, yet again we had to cancel the 2023 Gedling Challenge hosted by Mapperley.

Looking forward, our pairs and singles knockouts started early April, playing off the yellow pots and the picturesque and challenging temporary green on the 6th hole. White pots can now be used, and the 6th green will be in play after the drainage works are completed during May.

Captains Drive-In

Myself and my Vice-Captain, Daryl Woolley, have been trying to predict when the 2024 golfing season will start so we can honour the tradition of the Captains Drive-In with me hitting the first drive of the season.  This will take place on Sunday 21 April after the last board competition of 2023 being the deferred Greensomes Cup.

I know we have a strong field of entrants for this popular competition, and I hope to see as many of you as possible after the round to support the Captains Drive-In, planned for 1530 Hrs. As usual, there is the opportunity to get involved and guess the distance of the drive with the cost of entry being donated to the Captains Charities this year which are Base51 and Emanuel House.

Captains Away Day

Lincolnshire Golf Club (Torksey) will be the venue for my away day. The course is always in great condition, I played there as a Junior when my uncle and cousin were members, it was an annual event to play there with my dad and enjoy 45 holes on the longest day of the year.

Over 70 members have committed to the event, and we will be travelling by coach to the club, where we will have breakfast, 18 holes followed by a meal and prize giving.

Captains Day

Planning to have a fun and memorable day. Proposing a team game with opportunities to obtain benefits such as mulligans, use a pro’s drive in addition to some individual prizes for nearest the pins and straightest drive.

There will be a meal afterwards and potentially live entertainment throughout the evening if interest is high enough. Please share your thoughts via the notice on the noticeboard.

Captains Away Weekend

This year I have arranged for 43# members and myself to head to Cheshire and enjoy 3 rounds of golf over a long weekend. We will be playing 3 different courses and staying 2 nights at the very impressive Carden Park venue where we will also be playing a Jack Nicklaus designed course.

There are places still available and in addition to testing your golfing skills against different courses, it is a great way to meet the club’s membership, including many of the committee members past and present.

See details on the noticeboard.
